A phone lying face down on a small wooden side table beside a cup of tea and a single green stem in a vase, a quiet private morning in a bright living room, the calm a journal for a secret relationship can make room for.

Is There a Journal for People in a Secret Relationship?

Secret Love · Guided Journaling · Research

Yes, and it has to do a few things an ordinary journal was never designed for.

In short

Yes. The Love in Secrecy Journal and its Midnight Edition are 90-day guided journals written specifically for secret relationships, affairs and situationships. Research on secrecy suggests the heavier part is not hiding the relationship from others but carrying it alone in your own head, and a journal built for that has to be private, structured and patient.

Most people who search for a journal like this have already tried the obvious version. A blank notebook, a notes app, a document with a harmless file name. It rarely lasts, and the reason is usually not a lack of discipline.

An ordinary journal assumes you can write about your life the way you would tell it to a friend. A secret relationship is the one part of your life that has no friend to tell it to, and that changes what the page needs to hold.

Is there a journal for people in a secret relationship?

Yes. The Love in Secrecy Journal from Journals by Simone is a 90-day guided journal for secret love, affairs, situationships and relationships nobody else knows about. Its Midnight Edition covers the same ninety days with a daily mood check-in and more structured prompts. Both are digital, private and delivered instantly.

I built them because I needed one and could not find it. When I was carrying a love that had no place to exist out loud, every journal I picked up was written for someone whose relationship could be named at dinner. The prompts asked about date nights and gratitude. None of them asked what it costs to decide, every single time, how much of the truth to tell.

So the Love in Secrecy Journal starts from a different assumption. It assumes nobody else knows, that you have not decided anything, and that you are not looking to be talked into leaving or staying. It simply gives the feeling a place to exist, one day at a time.

Why does a secret relationship take up so much room in your head?

Research on secrecy points to an answer most people recognise immediately. People return to their secrets in their own thoughts far more often than they ever have to actively hide them from someone, and it is that repeated mind-wandering, not the concealment itself, that predicted lower well-being across a series of studies.

That finding comes from Michael Slepian and his colleagues at Columbia University, who studied the secrets people keep in everyday life. The moments of actively hiding something turned out to be comparatively rare. What filled the days was the quiet return to the secret, alone, while doing something else entirely.

For a secret relationship, that pattern is familiar. The hard moments are not only the careful conversations. They are the evenings when the whole thing replays in your head and there is nobody to say it to, so it goes around again.

Research Lehmiller, J.J. (2009, Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, 35(11), 1452–1466): across two studies, greater secrecy about a romantic relationship was associated with lower commitment, lower self-esteem and more reported health symptoms. The data are correlational, so they describe a pattern rather than prove that secrecy causes these outcomes.

This is where writing has a specific job. A page cannot make the relationship less secret. What it can do is give the thoughts that keep returning somewhere to land, so they do not have to live only in your head.

What should a journal for a secret relationship actually do?

A journal for a secret relationship should do four things an ordinary diary does not: stay private without needing a hiding place, replace the blank page with specific questions, help you separate what happened from what you hoped it meant, and run long enough for patterns to become visible, which usually means weeks rather than days.

These four points are the design brief I worked from, and they are also a fair checklist for any journal you are considering.

Privacy that does not depend on a drawer

If you are worried about the book, you will never be fully honest in it. A digital journal removes the problem instead of solving it, because nothing arrives at your door and the file lives behind the passcode you already use. I wrote more about that in how to keep a journal nobody can find.

Questions instead of an empty page

A blank page is hardest exactly when the feeling is biggest. Specific prompts give you a first sentence and a direction, which is why every page follows the four steps of the Emotional Clarity Journey: notice, name, regulate, decide.

Facts on one side, hope on the other

In a secret relationship, small signals carry enormous weight. A message at midnight can mean everything or nothing. Writing down what actually happened, separately from what you felt it meant, is one of the most useful habits a journal can build.

Research Lieberman, M.D. et al. (2007, Psychological Science, 18(5), 421–428): in an fMRI study, putting feelings into words was associated with reduced amygdala response to negative emotional images and increased activity in the right ventrolateral prefrontal cortex. Naming a feeling, in other words, is not a passive act.

Enough time for a pattern

One evening of writing captures a mood. Ninety days show you how the feeling actually moves, which weeks it grows and which it quietens, and what tends to come before each. That is why both Love in Secrecy editions run for ninety days in three phases of thirty.

Which Love in Secrecy edition fits you?

Choose the Love in Secrecy Journal if you think in longer passages and want room to write freely. Choose the Midnight Edition if open pages feel overwhelming and you would rather answer four focused prompts and track your mood each day. Both cover the same ninety days and the same three-phase arc.
Love in Secrecy Journal Midnight Edition
Daily format Three open questions Mood check-in and four focused sentence completions
Best for Writing freely, longer entries Structure, shorter entries, tracking patterns
Length 90 days in three phases, with milestone pages 90 days in three phases, with milestone pages
Format PDF for GoodNotes, Notability or home printing PDF for GoodNotes, Notability or home printing

The Midnight Edition was designed for people who would never call themselves journal writers. If a daily practice sounds like homework, the structured version is usually the easier way in.

"A secret relationship is the one part of your life that has no friend to tell it to. The page has to be that place."

What if ninety days feels like too much right now?

Then start smaller. The first seven days of the Emotional Clarity Calendar are free and show you exactly how the practice feels. The What If 7-Day Journal is one focused week on a single question, and the full Calendar runs thirty days with one prompt and one short grounding ritual each day.

There is no right entry point. Some people need the whole ninety days from the start because the feeling has been with them for a long time. Others need one quiet week first, just to find out whether writing helps them at all. Both are reasonable, and neither commits you to anything beyond the next page.

If you would rather read before you write, Writing the Unspoken is a guided eBook that explains why secret love feels the way it does, with prompts and three unsent letters inside.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a journal for people in a secret relationship?

Yes. The Love in Secrecy Journal and its Midnight Edition from Journals by Simone are 90-day guided journals written for secret love, affairs, situationships and relationships nobody else knows about. Both are digital PDFs, so nothing arrives at your door and the file stays behind your own passcode.

Can someone find out that I bought a secret love journal?

No package is sent and nothing sits on a shelf. The journal arrives as a download link by email and lives on a device only you unlock. There is no account and no app, and nothing you write is visible to or stored by Journals by Simone.

Is a journal for an affair only for the person who is not free?

No. The journals are written for anyone carrying a relationship that cannot be spoken about openly, whether you are the one who is not free, the one who waits, or someone whose feelings were never said out loud. The prompts ask what you feel and need, not who is right.

What is the difference between the Love in Secrecy Journal and the Midnight Edition?

Both cover 90 days in three phases of thirty days. The Love in Secrecy Journal asks three open questions a day and leaves room for longer writing. The Midnight Edition adds a daily mood check-in and four focused sentence completions, for people who prefer structure over open pages.

Does journaling replace therapy?

No. A guided journal is a tool for private reflection and can sit alongside therapy, but it replaces nothing. If your sleep, work or relationships are affected over a longer period, that belongs with a qualified professional.

Where to start

  1. The first 7 days of the Emotional Clarity Calendar, free, one prompt and one short grounding ritual a day, to find out whether this way of writing suits you.
  2. Love in Secrecy Journal, ninety days of open writing for a relationship nobody else knows about.
  3. Love in Secrecy Midnight Edition, the same ninety days with a daily mood check-in and focused prompts.
  4. Why loving someone in secret is so exhausting, if you want to understand the weight before you start writing.

A secret relationship asks a lot of you in company. It should not also have to wait until you find the right drawer, the right notebook or the right moment. The page is ready on the evening you are.
